moving it through

"We've got to MOVE IT, MOVE IT!" - are not just funny lyrics sung by King Julien of the 2014 Penguins of Madagascar movie.

If I have learned anything in my 3 decades of studying functional movement and neuro-somatics, it is that emotions will wreak havoc on the body and the mind if they stay stagnate in the body.

How often do you push down what you truly feel? Think about it - those signals from your gut instinct, the tension in your neck and jaw, the heaviness in your stomach, the fluttering in your heart... how many times have you dismissed them? Science now confirms what ancient healing traditions have always known: our bodies literally store these unprocessed emotions in our cells. These "somatosensations" become physically embodied whether we consciously acknowledge them or not - creating patterns in our tissues that can affect everything from posture to immune function. PNAS, the peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journal, explains somatosensations and how we embody them:

Mindfulness, meditation, and breath practices are also priceless tools to have in your belt for navigating life BUT sometimes they are not the tool to draw. There are times when the brain needs physiological distraction from the body.

May is Mental Health Awarness Month. I honor the attention given to this month, because we all have mental health to tend to. I share tools for mood regulation because I have had friends, partners, and family members take their life or have suicidal ideation. We as humans in the 21st century need more than one or two tools in our belts to practice mental health.

So get up! Move it. Practice. Be silly and let yourself be free from judgement- your own even. Make movements that don't look perfect. Just move, jump, shake! Move the ick out of your mind. The cells of your body and your brain will thank you!

And, if my movements 😆(or your movements) don't lighten your day - check out King Julien's moves (after you skip the advertisement)... https://youtube.com/watch?v=hyZgnPY-ttQ&feature=shared
